70 Years of Great Achievements in China


  • The gross enrollment rate of preschool education increased from 0.4 % in 1950 to 81.7% in 2018.
  • Net enrollment in primary schools increased from 20% in 1949 to 99.95% in 2018.

On July 24, the Ministry of Education (MOE) released the 2018 statistical bulletin on the development of China's education sector.

Statistics show that in 2018, China had 518,800 schools of all types and all levels, an increase of 5,017 or 0.98 percent over the previous year. A total of 276 million students received academic education at all levels and types, an increase of 5.3940 million or 2.00% over the previous year. There were 16,728,500 full-time teachers, an increase of 459,600 or 2.83% over the previous year.


It is worth mentioning that the 2018 national education development statistical bulletin published the relevant statistics of student numbers and enrollment rate in its attached charts, at the same time issuing corresponding statistics in 1949 (or 1950), 1965, 1978, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017. By comparison, we can see that great achievements have been made in education since the founding of PR China 70 years ago. For example, the gross enrollment rate of preschool education increased from 0.4 percent in 1950 to 81.7 percent in 2018. In other sections, statistical comparisons between 1949 and 2018 showed that the net enrollment rate for primary schools increased from 20% to 99.95%, for junior middle schools increased from 3.1% to 100.9%, for senior high schools increased from 1.1% to 88.8%, and for higher education increased from 0.26% to 48.1%.


According to the statistics released by the bulletin, 14.2404 million students who are from migrant workers in cities received compulsory education. Among them, 10.4839 million are in primary schools and 3.7565 million are in junior middle schools.There are 2,152 special education schools in China, with 58,700 full-time teachers and 123,500 students enrolled in various forms of special education.

The statistical bulletin also shows that there are 183,500 private schools of various types and at various levels, accounting for 35.36 percent of the country's total enrollment and 17.7975 million students. There are 53,782,100 students in all types of education.
